In this class you will learn how to prepare your clay for firing, learn how to join pieces and create details and character which are unique to you. Together we will look into the different hand building techniques including slab, pinch and coil, before making your own individual pieces.
What we will make?
A pinch, coil or slab pot can be the base for simple bowls, mugs, planters or vases. These are just some ideas to get you started however you’re more than welcome to create whatever you’d like. You will have the opportunity to add texture and slip to create colour and contrast using different techniques including sgrafitto, stencils and slip trailing. Work will be available to collect once dried, fired and glazed (around 4 weeks later).
What’s included?
Price includes one larger piece or 2 medium pieces along side 2 or 3 smaller pieces.
Earthenware clay, coloured slips and tools
Guidance and top tips
A range of natural materials to create texture, prints and embossed details.
What to bring?
- Drinks and light refreshments will be available
- Whilst hand building is not too messy it can be helpful to bring an apron to protect your clothes and an old towel to wipe your hands

Please arrive anytime from 12:40, there is free parking at the Hall where there will be light refreshments including freshly baked cakes and hot/cold drinks. From then until 1PM we can introduce ourselves and get to know what you want to take away from the workshop. At 1PM I will show you where we will be working and introduce you to the clay and tools. Once started we will go through the three main techniques before working on your main piece(s) and starting to look into colour and texture. We will continue to finalise and finish the pieces and clean down for 4pm.
Once the fun is over I will allow the pieces to fully dry before bisque firing and glaze firing them ready for you collection (roughly 4 weeks later).
